An empowerment ('wang' in Tibetan, 'abhiseka' in Sanskrit), is a Buddhist ritual which initiates a student into a particular vajrayana deity practice. The Chenrezig empowerment is an initiation into the meditation practice of Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit), the bodhisatva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas.
Receiving the empowerment is considered to make the Chenrezig practice more effective. Its is also considered a blessing for all those who attend.
This empowerment will be conducted by the 10th Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. Rinpoche is a learned and respected Tibetan Buddhist teacher schooled in both the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages under the guidance of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa and His Holiness Dilgo Kyentse Rinpoche. He was recognized as an incarnation of the previous Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche by His Holiness 16th Karmapa and studied at the Nalanda Institute in Rumtek, Sikkim, where he obtained the title of an Acharya. Presently he lives in his monastery Benchen Phuntsok Dargyeling in Kathmandu, Nepal where he teaches and spends considerable time in retreat.
Rinpoche's source of emanation is the Buddha Maitreya, and he is said to have taken many births as different Mahasiddhas of India, such as Yeshe Nyingpo and Pandita Mirtijana. He works tirelessly for the benefit of sentient beings.
